Teeth Cleaning

Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are performed by our Registered Dental Hygenists.

Your cleaning appoint will include a dental exam and the following:

  • Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for sometime and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line, and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
  • Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease!
  • Teeth polishing: Remove stain and plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.
  • Fluoride treatments for children 12 and under every six months as needed.

Our goal is to help you maintain and improve your oral health.

To achieve this goal, the dental care that you and your family receive in our office always includes state of the art equipment and technologies.

Among the newest technologies is a small laser instrument called the DIAGNOdent, which scans your teeth with harmless laser light searching for hidden decay.  This unique instrument provides instant feedback on the health of the tooth.  A pen like probe simple glides over tooth surfaces constantly checking the health of the tooth.  A number scale and an alarm signals the hygenist/dentist when there are signs of hidden decay.  This new technology is completely safe and pain free.

Pit & Fissure Sealants

The top surfaces of your teeth - where the chewing takes place - aren't smooth and flat. They are cris-crossed with tiny hills and valleys - called pits and fissures. These are places where plaque can build up safe from your toothbrush and dental floss. Some of the pits and fissures are so narrow that even a single bristle from your toothbrush can't get deep enough to clean them out.

One method of preventing cavities from developing in the pits and fissures is to seal them off with a special varnish called a pit and fissure sealant. If the dentist determines that you need a pit and fissure sealant to help protect your teeth from decay, some special steps are taken to prepare the teeth first. The dentist will clean the tooth first, then apply a mild acid solution to 'etch' the surface and make it easier for the pit and fissure sealant to stick. The whole procedure is quick and painless. Keeping the area dry and away from your saliva during the application is very important. If the tooth gets wet, the sealant might not stick properly. Once everything is ready, the dentist 'paints' the sealant right over the pits and fissures on the tooth surface. A special kind of light cures the sealant and makes it ready for use.

How long does a cleaning take?

All appointments are scheduled for 40 minutes.  If you are late you will be asked to reschedule your appointment so that we can respect the next patients appointment time.

What can you do to between dental cleanings?

Given the potential link between periodontitis and systemic health problems, prevention may be an important step in maintaining overall health.

  • Brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day.
  • Clean between your teeth with floss or another type of interdental cleaner once a day.
  • Choose dental products with the American Dental Association's Seal of Acceptance.
  • Eat a balanced diet and limit snacks which may reduce your risk of tooth decay and gum disease
  • Schedule regular dental checkups.  Professional cleanings are the only way to remove tartar.
